Frankly, it’s probably still Celeste.
I know the only game people are playing and talking about right now is Smash 5, and sure that game is huge and intricate and easy to sink your entire life into. There’s no doubt it’s a good game.
But it’s just another Smash.
I think Celeste will stand the test of time. It’s something that gets stuck in people’s heads. The themes, the music, the fascinating mechanics. People like so many aspects of it, they can’t put their fingers on all of them.
Smash is a bigger game. But quantity and popularity are no substitute for the level of quality that can be packed into a game that does so much with so little.
